When is the best time to take out education insurance?

The direct answer: now. Time is your greatest ally — and every passing year works against you.

This question has a short answer and a long answer. The short answer: now. The long answer: also now, but with details worth understanding so you can reach that conclusion yourself — without pressure from anyone.

The question every parent asks themselves

Most parents who approach VidaSEguros EG have the same question: When should I do this? Some wait until their child starts nursery. Others wait for primary school. Others say they will do it "when things are more stable". A small proportion take out a policy when their child is born.

Interestingly, it is precisely the last group who sleep most peacefully.

Why time is the most important factor

Education insurance does not work like a bank product that you can enter and leave freely. It follows actuarial principles: the younger you are when you take out the policy, the lower the statistical risk assumed by the insurer, and therefore the lower the monthly premium.

But there is something more important than price: the Cumulative cover. Every month your policy is active is a month in which your family is protected. If something happens to you that month, the insurance provides cover. If you have no insurance that month, there is no cover to claim.

"The best insurance is the policy you already have. The worst is the one you were thinking of taking out."

What you lose with every year you wait

Take a concrete example. A 34-year-old parent who takes out education insurance today for his 2-year-old daughter pays a lower monthly premium than if he waits until age 38. Why? Because at 38 the actuarial risk is higher, and that is reflected in the cost.

But the financial cost is only part of the problem. The other part is invisible: those four years of waiting are four years without family protection. If something had happened during that time — an illness, an accident or a disability — there would have been no insurance to cover that girl's educational future.

Taken out today
Lower premium, immediate cover

The family is protected from the first month. If something happens, the insurance provides cover. The premium reflects the policyholder's current age, which is the most favourable.

Taken out in 3 years
Higher premium, years without cover

There is no protection during the years spent waiting. When the policy is finally taken out, the premium is higher because the policyholder is older. Those years cannot be recovered.

Three ideal moments — ranked from best to least favourable

If you want a practical guide, here it is:

1
At birth

This is the ideal time. The policyholder is usually aged 25 to 35, the premium is at its lowest, and cover builds from day one. You have almost two decades ahead to protect your child's education.

2
When nursery or primary school begins

There is still time. The premium is slightly higher than at birth, but the cover remains strong and there are enough years left for the insurance to serve its purpose.

3
Before high school

The last reasonable window. The premium is higher and the time available is shorter, but taking out insurance is still better than having none. It is the last opportunity to secure a child's educational future before university begins.

No pressure - logic only

This is not a sales argument. It is a question of time. Education insurance has a price that rises with the policyholder's age, and cover that cannot be recovered retrospectively. If you are 32 today and take out a policy, you pay the premium for a 32-year-old. If you wait five years and take it out at 37, you pay the premium for a 37-year-old — and those five years without cover cannot be recovered.

You can wait. You can take all the time you need to decide. Nobody is forcing you to do anything. But while you decide, time moves on. In this context, time is not neutral: it works for you if you act, and against you if you do not.

"There is no perfect time to take out insurance. But one moment will always be better than all the others: today."
